Memory Foam or Sprung Mattress?
There is a point when your old, box spring mattress set needs to be replaced. If you have been out looking at mattresses you are probably suffering a little from sticker shock. Remember, if you are like most people it has probably been about a decade since you purchased your current mattress set. While you are giving yourself a little time to get used to the new prices of mattresses, you may want to consider what type of mattress will work best for you, a sprung mattress like you have now or a memory foam mattress.
While it may be tempting to just buy a new memory foam mattress topper and call it good, this is not a good way to revive a tired, old mattress. If your current mattress is sagging and lumpy, your mattress topper will simply take on those traits as well. So, now you are back to your original question, springs or memory foam?
While spring mattresses are being constructed with new materials and methods, they are still built basically the same way they were a decade ago. If the reason that you are looking at a new mattress is because your current mattress is not offering you the support that you need, then you may want to consider looking at a memory foam mattress.
One advantage that a memory foam mattress has over a standard spring mattress is that it has the ability to adjust to your body weight. This is a great feature, especially if you are married, because two people can sleep on the same mattress, and the mattress will adapt to each body weight individually. A memory foam mattress also does not transfer movement, so if one person has a restless night’s sleep, it does not necessarily mean that the other one will as well.
As you lay on a memory foam mattress, the mattress begins to absorb your body heat, and it begins to soften. While some of the original memory foam mattresses could actually become too hot, the newer designs have an air exchange system that helps to maintain comfort.
When you are comparing prices between memory foam and spring mattresses, remember to compare the same level of quality for each, and you will find that the price is pretty comparable between the two. So that means your new mattress selection may have to just depend on comfort.
